CHUNKY MOVE PRESENTS MORTAL ENGINE feat. Robin Fox

Computer musician Robin Fox will be in Philadelphia this month providing sound/laser design for Australian dance company Chunky Move in their new work "Mortal Engine". This beast of an event has been highly praised for it's cutting edge use of "interactive systems that allow light, video, sound, and performers to respond to each other in real time". It's guaranteed to be unlike any dance event you've ever seen before so don't miss this! Mortal Engine will be showing at the Wilma Theater as part of the Live Arts Festival on September 17-19th. Tickets are available through the Live Arts website.

The Instruments of Erkki Kurenniemi

One of the undeniable pioneers of Finnish electronic music is Erkki Kurenniemi (b. 1941), who founded The University of Helsinki Electronic Music Studio in the early 1960's. Kurenniemi built his own series of synthesizers, named as DIMI, which are nowadays mostly possessed by Swedish collector and electronic musician Ralph Lundsten, and published some of his experimental compositions like 'Dance of the Antropoids'. Alongside such Finnish pioneers as Eino Ruutsalo (for whose short films Kurenniemi composed music), Kurenniemi also did some early work on the field of Finnish media art and contributed to Finnish video art and happenings. Kurenniemi created the first commercially manufactured and marketed microcomputer already in 1973 -- two years before the American MITS Altair. These days Kurenniemi works as an independent researcher, specialising in such subjects as artificial intelligence.

In this concert we find Erkki and friends performing on some of his DIMI-S instruments. Details on some of these instruments can be found here.

LISTENING:: Belsona Academy Podcast

Our new friend Thomas Bailey has recently started a podcast to highlight some of the "radical" electronic music featured in his new book Micro Bionic (paperback due out later this month). In it's first week Thomas has played two great sets, an unreleased live concert from Francisco Lopez and an incredible ultrasound field recording of bats from EVOL. Both are excellent and I have a feeling more great music is on the way. Be sure to add it to your RSS feed. If you're a musician or sound artist working in a similar field of what's been presented and would like to submit something to be played, drop him a line at niflheim.thom@gmail.com.

Brief article on Howard Stelzer

Our pal Howard Stelzer gets a little write-up in Boston's free weekly. Look out for, hopefully, Howie to visit Philly in the fall. Maybe as part of PSF's one year anniversary!

Eliane Radigue trailer (in French)

A non-subtitled short film about/with beloved synth and drone composer Eliane Radigue. See some shots of her studio and, if nothing else, check out how beautiful she was in her youth. I think I understood the words "avec" and possibly "Mac." Unfortunately, there is no music, but see below for that. Gorgeous and slowly-developing heavy drone vistas.

Some brief audio clips are here, here, and by clicking on album titles here.

A 1999 article from the Wire.
